How Much Does a 1,200 Square Foot Metal Building Cost?
You do not need to be planning a large manufacturing facility or hangar building to consider the pre-engineered metal building option. The flexible and efficient design possibilities make metal buildings a popular choice for smaller spaces as well – your 1,200 square foot space would be a good candidate for any of the following:
- Auto Garage
- Backyard Shop and Office
- Equipment Shed
- Machine Storage
- Detached Apartment
- And Much More!
Everything else being equal – eave height, roof pitch, accessories, etc. – the prices for three different 1,200 square foot buildings can vary depending on their width and length. Here are three different example buildings that help to explain why.
How much does a 30’ x 40’ metal building cost?
The 30’ wide by 40’ long option allows for a very efficient design and comes with the lowest price. Your 30’ x 40 metal building is roughly $23,616 to $25,600 before delivery – or $19.68 to $21.34 per square foot for 1,200 square feet. This configuration only has three frame lines with 20’ wide bay spacing, and this means less steel is needed to create a sturdy structure.

How much does a 24’ x 50’ metal building cost?
The 50’ length on this building allows for the same three frame lines but spaces them at 25’ apart, and this requires longer and heavier secondary framing members (called girts) between the columns. At this size the cost difference is fairly negligible, and your 24’ x 50’ metal building would be priced between $24,320 and $26,340 – or $20.26 and $21.96 per square foot for 1,200 square feet.

How much does a 20’ x 60’ metal building cost?
The 20’ wide by 60’ long option creates a long and narrow building that is well-suited for manufacturing applications and tighter fits, but the extra length also means that an additional frame line is needed. This means that a 20’ x 60’ metal building will cost between $26,480 and $28,700 before delivery – or $22.06 to $23.92 per square foot for 1,200 square feet. The extra frame adds a good deal of steel!

Accessories and Insulation
Your metal building representative will not only work with you to determine the dimensions of your structure, but will also help you choose from among a number of accessories. There are a variety of entry doors, overhead doors, windows, and quality-of-life upgrades available to you depending on the needs of your project.
It is highly recommended that you consider insulating your metal building. Not only will it prevent your metal from ‘sweating’ as a result of temperature changes, but it will also help you save hundreds to thousands of dollars over your buildings lifetime. The blankets will be cut-to-fit and faced with a white plastic that gives your interior a clean, finished look.
Several thicknesses are available, but the 4” R-13 option is the most popular due to being easily installed between your framing and sheeting during erection. Because the blankets are cut specifically for the dimensions of your building, the price can vary depending on the configuration.
With that in mind, insulating the roof and walls of a your 1,200 square foot metal building with 4” R-13 insulation would cost between $2,490 and $2,990!
The prices above were determined in August of 2019 and are subject to change. Building Prices assume erection in a non-snow area with typical, low windspeeds and may vary depending on local code requirements, accessories, and any special design elements.
