Compared with other construction types, metal buildings offer lower costs of erection, maintenance and ownership. If you’re considering buying one and wondering how much you should budget for it, it helps to know what size building you need.
Ultimately, the final price of your prefabricated metal building will depend on:

- The customizations you choose
- The building codes you must meet
- The condition of your jobsite (i.e., whether it has foundation)
…among other variables. However, for the sake of estimating, let’s say you’re looking for a relatively basic steel building that is 40’x50’ in size.
Estimating Costs
Generally, for a relatively small steel building, most people pay between about $17.22 and $19.44 a square foot to cover the cost of materials. As far as erecting your building, plan to budget somewhere in the ballpark of $6 to $10 a square foot.
A 40’x50’ metal building offers 2,000 square feet of usable space, and once you add the cost of materials with the cost of raising the building, expect to pay between about $50,440 and $70,880 for a base 40’x50’ building package.

Cutting Costs
If you are working with a tight budget, there are some things you may be able to do to lower your initial investment. Smaller buildings typically offer lower price tags, so reducing its size is one way to save money.
The same holds true when it comes to ceiling height. Unless you need ample storage or to accommodate automotive lifts or other large equipment, consider lowering your building’s eave height to lower total costs.
The roof pitch you choose also has an impact on your building’s final price. The most economical option is typically to go with a 1:12 roof pitch, as steeper pitches bring with them higher price tags.
