How Much Does a 1,600 Square Foot Metal Building Cost?

Pre-engineered metal buildings offer a unique blend of efficient design, customizability, and affordable pricing that makes them an excellent option for any project. Your 1,600 square foot space can be designed to accommodate any of the following applications:

  • Storage Barn
  • Machine Shop
  • Maintenance Garage
  • Metal Building Home
  • Retail and Office Space
  • And Much More!

Even with identical footprint sizes, eave heights, accessories, etc., there can be remarkable price differences between different widths and lengths in metal buildings. Here are three different examples of 1,600 square foot buildings that help to explain why:

How much does a 40’ x 40’ metal building cost?

With 20’ aisles and 20’ bays, the 40’ x 40’ metal building makes very efficient use of its steel. Your 40’ x 40’ metal building is $27,020 to $29,280 before delivery – or $16.88 to $18.30 per square foot for 1,600 square feet.

How much does a 32’ x 50’ metal building cost?

This configuration uses wider bays that are slightly more expensive, but the narrower span means the main frames can be made lighter and more cost effective. This means that 32’ x 50’ is practically the same cost as the previous example, coming in at $27,000 to $29,240!

How much does a 20’ x 80’ metal building cost?

Production buildings often benefit from having a narrower but longer space to help with workflow, which is where the 20’ x 80’ sizing can be useful. The extra length of the building, however, makes it necessary to add an additional frame line. The additional steel causes your 20’ x 80’ metal building to cost between $32,880 and $35,620 – or $20.46 to $22.26 per square foot for 1,600 square feet.

Accessories and Insulation

Once you have determined the dimensions of your building, you will want to select any necessary accessories. Besides the typical entry doors, overhead doors, and windows, there are also various ventilation and aesthetic options to choose from depending on the needs of your project.

Fiberglass blanket insulation is one staple accessory that is suggested for any metal building application. Not only will it save you hundreds to thousands of dollars in energy costs, but it will also help protect your roof and walls from condensation build up and ‘sweating.’

There are a variety of thicknesses and thermal values available depending on your needs, but the 4” R-13 option is the most popular thickness due to its value and ease of installation. Your fiberglass blankets will be cut to fit, so the width and length of your building will affect pricing.

With that in mind, insulating the roof and walls of your 1,600 square foot metal building with 4” R-13 insulation would only cost between $2,850 and $3,440!

Double Layer Insulation

The prices above were determined in July of 2019 and are subject to change. Building Prices assume erection in a non-snow area with typical, low windspeeds and may vary depending on local code requirements or any special design elements.
